Welcome to Life at Temple Baptist Church
At Temple Baptist Church in Salida, Colorado, we are interested in life. Jesus said, “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” Life is what Jesus is all about.
Temple Baptist Church is all about life, life here on earth and eternal life in heaven. We invite you to join us in life. It’s Happening Right Now!
If you're spiritually alive, you're going to love this! If you're spiritually dead, you won't want to read it. If you're spiritually curious, there is still hope!
Vacation Bible School
A young boy was in Vacation Bible School class and they were studying David. The teacher asked the students…
“Does anyone know where David was originally from?” One little boy was waving his hand wildly in the air and shouting “oh..oh...oh I know.” The teacher called on him and he answered with great confidence, “CALIFORNIA”.
The teacher was quite taken aback by the young boys answer and said lovingly, “no I am afraid that is not correct”.
The little boy said “well it has to be right”. The teacher was a bit curious at this point and said… “OK, if David were from California where in California was he from?” The little boy answered, “PALM SPRINGS CALIFORNIA of course… Don’t you ever listen in church… the preacher is always talking about the “PALMS” of David.
And……. A youngster went home after VBS and said to his father, “Today we heard a wonderful story from the Bible. The teacher said the Jews were chased out of Egypt by Egyptian tanks.” “When they came to the Red Sea, the Jews saw the Egyptian tanks coming after them so they built a bridge and went over safely. But when the Egyptians kept coming, they blew it up with an atomic bomb and the Egyptians were destroyed.” His father said, “Did the teacher really tell you the story that way?” He replied, “No, but if I told you how he did tell the story, you’d never believe it.”
And……. Another lady said, “In our church’s VBS one of the 4 year-old boys rushed to his father at the close of the evening activities and proudly announced that he had learned his Bible verse for the day, Psalms 46:1.” “That’s great,” his father said, “Let me hear it.” The little boy said, “GOD IS OUR REFUGE AND STRENGTH, AND OUR PRESIDENT’S IN TROUBLE.”
And……. Another lady said, “When I picked up my two boys from their last day of VBS, I asked if they would like to attend next summer.” “Yes”, they said, “but next year it should be only four days.” I was puzzled so I asked, “why only four days.” My five-year-old said, “BECAUSE IT’S HARD TO BE GOOD 5 DAYS IN A ROW.”
There are many ways to describe VBS. I would like to challenge you to consider these three:
Loving—the children that will be in our church the week of VBS will show you some loving that will change your heart. There will also be children here that need your loving. I want to encourage you to sign up and serve in VBS. You will love and be loved.
Listening—to God and to the children. After the sermon, the small boy asked his father what the minister did all week. His father said, “A minister is very busy. There’s much church work that has to be done. He has to visit the shut-in people and go to the hospital to visit and pray for those who are sick or having surgery. He talks to people who have problems. He must pray a lot for people. And of course, he must spend quite a bit of time preparing his sermon for the next Sunday. TALKING IN PUBLIC IS HARD WORK.” His small son promptly replied, “LISTENING ISN’T EASY EITHER.”
Living– VBS is life. You will hear and learn what goes on in a child’s life. One time the governor of Massachusetts was running for a second term in office. One day, after a busy day he arrived at a church barbecue. It was late afternoon and he had not eaten. As the governor moved through the serving line, he held out his plate to the woman who was serving the chicken. She put a piece on his plate and turned to the next person in line. “ Excuse me”, said the governor, “do you mind if I have another piece of chicken?” “Sorry”, the woman told him. “I’m supposed to give one piece of chicken only to each person.” “But I’m starved.” “ Sorry,” said the woman. The governor then said, “Do you know who I am? I am the governor of this state.” “Do you know who I am?” the woman answered back. “I’M THE LADY IN CHARGE OF THE CHICKEN. MOVE ALONG, MISTER.” It doesn’t make any difference who you are, governor, president, or Bill Gates. When God gives instructions to live we should obey. We can set the example for some children in teaching them to live the way God wants.
VBS is a great outreach tool. Our community knows that we at Temple Baptist Church loves children. Lets have the greatest VBS ever.
